Many times families want to be helpful without asking the question, "Is my help really helpful?" In fact, families may unknowingly or knowingly contribute to the continuation of addiction. Margaret Paul, Ph.D., highlights mistakes family members make regarding helping their loved ones with their addiction. She notes that many times family members want to be in control of their family member's addiction, yet forget that the choice to act out addictively is 100% the addict's choice and family members cannot control this. Family members can be a support system to an addict but can't make decision for them. The family members need to accept the powerlessness over another's choices and behaviors. Another issue is a family's failure to examine their own contributions to family addictions by not realizing co-dependency issues and not taking care of themselves.
The Family Education Program brings about awareness and consciousness to one's thoughts, feelings and actions that can be part of the the problem and not part of the solution. The program groups emphasize that self-empowerment is self-acknowledgement of personal responsibility, accountability, personal growth, safety, and relationship enhancement, which cannot happen with the presence of alcohol and drug addiction.
