The Texas House A Residential Treatment Facility for Men History |
|
|
The Texas House was established in 1965 as a non-profit organization providing comprehensive treatment for indigent men with alcohol and drug addiction. The first facility was located at 1118 Crawford the former YWCA building in downtown Houston. The story told to me was that since this was previously a women’s facility, the men would have to bend down to get under the shower heads. The program had a midnight curfew Monday-Thursday and one o’clock am on Friday and Saturday nights. There were two education groups in the mornings, one hour work therapy, two hours recreation and two hours of free time. Every evening the residents would travel to a local AA group. Our program has progressed somewhat in the last 40 years. In 1985 The Texas House was awarded a contract with the Board of Pardons and Parole to provide transitional treatment service to inmates being released from prison. As a result the old Southern Bible College facility, located at 10950 Beaumont Hwy facility was purchased and the organization was relocated. About a year or so later, one of the Texas House administrators approached a local business owner (who was sympathetic to our cause) about a vacant apartment complex located at 2208 West 34th Street. The business agreed to let The Texas House use the facility to provide residential treatment services. Keeping the tradition of helping the indigent man, the 34th St. clients would reside at this location and work at the Beaumont Highway facility. The Beaumont Highway Facility provided treatment for several different treatment modalities over the years, but it ultimately diverted the Organization from it’s primary purpose, "which is to provide treatment services for indigent men." As a result, in 1994, the Directors made the decision to terminate the contract with The Board of Pardon and Paroles, sell the facility, and to refocus on the primary purpose. Once the sale was finalized, the Therapeutic Community located at the 34th Street facility began taking shape and has evolved into a very effective treatment venue serving the Southeast Texas area. The primary values of right living, being my brothers keeper, incorporating chemical dependency education, twelve step philosophies, group processing, and the operation of a client government, provide the basis of the Therapeutic Community. Our community is focused on the primary purpose of helping the indigent man. Our program is steeped in the traditions of Alcoholics Anonymous and operates as a Therapeutic Community. Since it's inception The Texas House has helped thousands of men in their recovery from the disease of alcoholism and drug addiction. As researched by Mr. Thomas M. |
